New coatings reduce infection risk from catheters
A novel device coating for urinary catheters (tubes inserted into the body to allow draining) can prove to be beneficial in lowering the risk of infection. The use of medical devices inserted into a patient’s body, often lead to complications that may lead to an increase in the time for which a patient is hospitalized or even more adverse cases, especially in patients who need the catheters to be inserted in the bladder for a long period as bacterial crusts form on the tubes, causing discomfort during removal. The coating developed at Queen’s University in Belfast self-cleanse the catheter when it becomes infected with bacteria.
