FDA warns against respiratory medications from Mylan

MylanThe FDA is advising consumers not to use certain respiratory medications made by Canonsburg-based Mylan Inc. The FDA says the medications may have been the part of a shipment being transported on a tractor-trailer that was stolen in Tampa, Florida, on September 8, 2009. The alert involves the Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution and Ipratropium Bromide Inhalation Solution. People who use the medications should check to see if they have any products that were received or purchased after September 8 and return them to the pharmacy where they were bought.

The first “suitcase” ICU receives CE approval

imsIntegrated Medical Systems Inc has received CE Mark certification for its MedEx 1000(TM) “suitcase” intensive care unit (ICU). The MedEx 1000 is a portable unit intended to supply ICU functionality, such as physiological monitoring, electrocardiogram, invasive pressure monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring, temperature, blood oxygen saturation and heart rate, low and high rate infusion pumps, a fluid warmer and a ventilator with carbon dioxide monitoring capabilities, for adult and pediatric patients.  This certification permits the marketing, sale and use of the MedEx 1000 in Europe.

RACGP launches ‘flu kit’ for epidemic control

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has launched its Pandemic Influenza Planning Toolkit: the ‘flu’ kit to support clinicians and nurses in order to educate staff. The kit is a part of the organization’s plan to deal with a situation like influenza epidemic. Primary care staff is crucial to the assessment of the disease and controlling its spread. The kit comprises of 5 practice posters and a CD with the education modules giving simple measures such as washing hands and mask wearing that can prevent the spread of respiratory infections.
